The members of the Association of technology engineers of Republika Srpska, participating in the RAISESEE project activities, managed to organize a successful visit to the firstly established factory dealing with PET recycle in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although this business is expanding by other companies as well, “Omorika reciklaža” is still setting an excellent example by constantly improving the process line and working on establishing the state-of-the-art quality control laboratory recently. At this moment factory is employing 51 people and uses highly-automated process lines. Factory is keeping a production on a good level despite pandemic by taking careful hygienic measures, which were respected during this high-school visit as well.
The pupils from two high schools: Technical high school and from the Catholic School Centre Banja Luka participated in the visit with one of their teachers as well. The young participants were able to see where the PET bottles and other waste is processed and will be able to disseminate about the factory to their peers. Namely, recycle culture regarding PET and other polymers is still not promoted enough in Bosnia and Herzegovina despite many existing “recycling stations” (the specific containers for waste separation) placed in school yards and large buildings blocks. Many people are sceptical about the recycle and are misled into thinking that even separated waste is thrown at the city landfills. This is not true and “Omorika reciklaža” factory would like to see even more waste collected, since currently they are even forced to import part of the waste. As this factory is having 97% of their final products exported due to excellent quality, the RAISESEE participants will now be able to support them by promoting the facts about this best practice example of PET recycle. Since the factory is licenced to buy the collected waste even from the citizens and small groups, this is a great chance for young people to collect some budgets for school activities by collecting PET and selling it for recycle.
